• Truth of Gaia
The shifter with this gift has the ability to sense when others have spoken truth or falsehood.
Note: In the interests of fair game-play, the player is required to message the storyteller (or if the storyteller is unavailable, a player not involved in the question/answer) prior to making this roll. The storyteller is informed of the question that will be asked, and subsequently rolled for, and the character goes ahead and asks. Once the target gives their response, the user's player then rolls, and the matter is resolved. Rolls will not be allowed after the question/answer if the storyteller wasn't first made aware of the user's intention to utilise this gift.
Cost: One essence point.
Dice Pool: Perception + Sense Deception.
Action: Immediate.
Roll Results
Botch: The shifter gains no sense as to whether the target is lying or speaking the truth. The shifter is also unable to use this gift on the same target again regarding the same subject matter. All essence spent is lost.
Failure: The shifter gains no sense as to whether the target is lying or speaking the truth. All essence spent is lost.
Success: The shifter can accurately judge whether the target is lying or speaking the truth.
•• Soul's Guilt
This gift allows the weight of guilt which rests on the heart to emerge to the surface, giving a visual representation of the target's inner emotion. The effect varies on a case by case basis.
Ie. A character with a guilty conscience regarding a murder may appear to have blood dripping from her hands, whilst a character with a guilty conscience regarding drug usage may have track marks appear on her arms. For guilt that is less definable, a shadowing appears across the subject's features.
Note: This gift centers around the target's guilt, and as such whether any visual representation surfaces is based on the target's own guilt or lack thereof - regardless of successes rolled.
Cost: One essence point.
Dice Pool: Perception + Empathy.
Action: Immediate.
Roll Results
Botch: The user's own guilt surfaces in a visual representation, visible for all to see. The user reveals a number of 'guilts' equal to the level on the botch roll. Ie. -1 botch, 1 guilt revealed, -2 botch, 2 guilts revealed, etc. This lasts for the duration of the scene. All essence spent is lost.
Failure: The shifter sees no indication of guilt. All essence spent is lost.
Success: The shifter is able to see a visual representation of the target's guilt. One guilt per success is shown. For indefinable guilts, the shadow simply darkens.
••• Omen of Truth
Making decisions in the World of Darkness is never an easy task under the best of circumstances, let alone the worst. By taking a moment to look around, the shifter may see in the fall of a leaf or the path of a butterfly a clue to the answer he seeks. This gift merely gives the user a nudge in the right direction towards the truth, and is not a clear-cut resolution to any problem he may be having - and should not be mistaken for such.
Cost: One essence point.
Dice Pool: Perception + Enigmas. The difficulty varies from 9 in a featureless, sealed space to 6 for a forest at sunset.
Action: Immediate.
Roll Results
Botch: The shifter is filled with certain, but erroneous direction. All essence spent is lost.
Failure: The shifter gains neither insight nor folly into his dilemma. All essence spent is lost.
Success: The shifter receives some level of insight into the problem he faces. Successes add to the nature and certainty of the omen.
System
This gift takes a minimum of one full minute to use; the user receives a -1 difficulty for the roll if he dwells on the problem for half an hour. More than most, the effects of this gift are up to the storyteller, and depend on the situation. This gift cannot be used more than once a day.
•••• Conundrum
The character can cut through much falsity or illusion with a few choice words. The words cannot be profane and must come in the form of a short haiku poem or koan. This gift is ineffective against level five gifts or disciplines.
Cost: Two essence points.
Dice Pool: Wits + Sense Deception.
Action: Immediate.
Roll Results
Botch: The shifter can only speak in truth for a number of days equal to the level on the botch roll. Ie. -1 botch, 1 day, -2 botch, 2 days, etc.
Failure: The shifter is unable to spot any falsity, illusion or lie as being such. All essence spent is lost.
Success: Any illusion designed to fool others is revealed as such. In addition, no character can speak falsely to the user for the remainder of the scene. This doesn't affect how other characters interact with each other however, and the user cannot tell if other characters are lying to one another.
••••• Guilt's Price
One of the shifter's eyes begins to glow a baleful red. Its stare is horrifying, causing wracking pain in any being who meets its glare and whose resolve falters.
Cost: Three essence points.
Dice Pool: Willpower versus the difficulty of the target's willpower.
Action: Immediate.
Roll Results
Botch: The user suffers the negative effects of this gift, taking a -5 dice penalty to all his actions for the remainder of the scene. If he is already at a Crippled level of damage, he effectively becomes Incapacitated. All essence spent is lost.
Failure: No target is affected. All essence spent is lost.
Success: Any foe that has shown to be false or has been revealed via Soul's Guilt during the current scene, who meets the shifter's gaze, will double over in agony as they feel the guilt of their previous sins. Such a foe is treated as Crippled (-5 dice to actions), even though the foe takes no actual wounds; foes who are already Crippled are effectively Incapacitated. If a foe successfully resists, she becomes immune to any further attempts during that scene. This gift stops working at the end of the scene.
